Herringbone flooring is a classic parquetry pattern created by laying rectangular boards in a staggered zigzag formation. Each board is placed at a right angle to the next, producing the distinctive broken pattern that gives herringbone its name.

The pattern has been used in European interiors for centuries and remains one of the most recognised timber flooring layouts. It adds movement and detail to a room while still feeling balanced and refined.

Today, herringbone flooring is commonly produced in engineered oak construction. This allows the traditional parquetry look to be combined with the stability and performance expected in modern homes and architectural interiors.

Why Herringbone Flooring Is Popular

The appeal of herringbone flooring comes from the balance between detail and simplicity. The pattern is visually interesting, yet it still works comfortably within a wide range of interior styles.

It is commonly chosen because it can:

  • introduce architectural detail to a room

  • enhance the scale of open living spaces

  • complement both contemporary and classic interiors

  • create a sense of craftsmanship in the flooring layout

When produced in engineered oak, herringbone flooring also provides improved stability compared with traditional solid parquetry floors.

Herringbone vs Chevron Flooring

herringbone pattern vs chevron pattern

Herringbone and chevron are both parquetry flooring patterns, but they are constructed differently.

Herringbone uses rectangular boards with square ends. Each board is laid perpendicular to the next, forming a staggered zigzag pattern.

Chevron flooring uses boards that are cut at an angle so that the ends meet to form a continuous point. This creates a sharper arrow shaped pattern.

Because the boards are not cut on an angle, herringbone has a softer and more classic appearance. Chevron tends to feel more directional and geometric.

Both patterns can work beautifully depending on the design of the interior.

Most modern herringbone floors are produced in engineered oak construction. This allows the natural beauty of oak to be combined with a structure designed for improved dimensional stability.

At Aspire Floors, the herringbone flooring featured on our website comes from the Lalegno Herringbone Collection, developed by Lalegno, an internationally recognised Belgian flooring brand known for its refined European oak collections, high quality craftsmanship and architectural design focus.

The collection is produced using carefully selected European oak and Lalegno’s distinctive three layer full oak balanced structure. Unlike conventional engineered flooring that uses plywood cores, this construction uses genuine oak for the top layer, core and backing layer, creating a fully balanced oak board structure.

This full oak construction delivers excellent dimensional stability, structural integrity and a more natural solid timber feel underfoot, making it particularly suited to high quality residential interiors and architect specified flooring projects.
