Blackbutt Flooring

This beautiful, native species is available from Aspire Floors in either solid or engineered blackbutt flooring. The Australian hardwood tree, Eucalyptus Pilularis, grows in the coastal forests of New South Wales and southern Queensland, hence it is often called Coastal Blackbutt. Together with Spotted Gum, this local wood species is a popular choice for Australian floors, both in solid hardwood floorboards and engineered flooring. Their strength and beauty make them ideal for this application, with the warmth and feel of real, indigenous wood.

The blackbutt is a fast-growing tree, reaching up to 50m in height, with trunks that can span 4m in width! Bark at the base of the tree is rough, though this changes halfway up the trunk to become white and smooth. Extremely fire-resistant, the blackbutt sacrifices its exterior and gains its name from its blackened buttress after a bush fire.

Blackbutt flooring varies from pale yellow or straw coloured to cream or light brown, with a warm, pink tone. The wood is coarse, but its texture is even and the interlocking 'cathedral' grain pattern is straight and visually appealing. Coupled with the fact that the wood is dense and durable, this makes blackbutt a perfect choice for both engineered and solid floorboards.

Aspire Floors construct an engineered floorboard for blackbutt flooring in the same way we make our engineered oak boards, ie. a 3mm surface of the actual blackbutt hardwood on a stabilised wooden base of 11mm to 12mm thickness. As a possible alternative to oak, with a nod to local materials, blackbutt flooring shows off the high quality Australian hardwood timber to its best advantage.
